I was born at the perfect time to pursue a career in full-stack software development. I grew up programming 8-bit computers, then learned Unix in college. I entered the workforce at the emergence of Windows for Workgroups and Linux, and I'll be retiring right about the time the AI's make me redundant. Also, the year Social Security goes broke.

Months and months of planning by lots and lots of middle management can save literally hours of programming.

H-1B Visas, Facebook, and Cummins
I ran across an article about Facebook’s use of H-1B visas in my news crawl. This part really caught my eye: Since 2017, as part of his promise to “hire American,” the Trump administration has been denying record numbers of … Continue reading
Top Marginal Tax Rates
Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, could be taxed NINETY-NINE POINT NINE PERCENT of his net worth, and STILL be worth a BILLION dollars. Let that sink in. $10M is pretty wealthy. $100M is pretty crazy. “Just” $1B is ludicrous. He … Continue reading
Warren on our Corporatocracy
I’ve been talking about corporate charters for a long time now, and people either don’t understand what I’m talking about, or think I’m crazy. We give people a charter to create a company, which grants them special, legal protections to … Continue reading
True cost of Medicaid is 2X headline cost?
I recently attended a talk by the CEO of a hospital with $2.6 billion in annual revenue. She noted that patients on Medicaid are 40 percent of the census and that Medicaid pays only 50 percent of t… Source: True … Continue reading
Stack Overflow Inc., sinat chinam, and the goat for Azazel – Mi Yodeya Meta
Now that this has been made public elsewhere, I feel safe in saying more. The policy is an update to the Code of Conduct that requires us to use people’s preferred pronouns (when known). What was posted in the TL … Continue reading
Flip the Script on the Racist Philly Police Officers
Time for another “flip-the-script” political test. If you were NOT a fan of police officers getting fired from the Philly police force when it was discovered that they were posting racist things in a Facebook group, because you believed that … Continue reading
Flip the Script on Liberal Representatives “Hate” of America
Trump has told “the squad” of women-of-color Congressional Representatives that, if they don’t like America, they can “leave.” This notion is very, very agreeable to a large portion of conservatives. Let’s have a mental exercise. Let’s flip the script here. … Continue reading
Bernie and Hurricanes
Bernie Sanders tweeted that hurricane Dorian was “entirely” caused by “climate change,” as though the world has never experienced a category-5 hurricane before. I can’t find his tweet about it now. It was so beyond the pale, I’m guessing he … Continue reading
Remove Richard Stallman – Selam G. – Medium
There is nothing wrong with women. There is nothing wrong with girls in STEM. There are many women and many girls who, in spite of everything, love STEM-related disciplines. Some of them even go through 4-year bachelors degrees at MIT, … Continue reading
A Comic by Adult Swim
This one caused a lot of controversy. I don’t really want to wade in on the debate about the meaning or the implications. I’m just posting it here because I fear it will go down the memory hole.
